While the idea of Yogateau had been percolating for some time, the site itself sprung up only twelve months ago. Having spent years practicing yoga in Paris, amassing info on studios, and having composed countless emails to friends and colleagues about where to go and which teachers to seek out in different arrondissements, I finally had an apple-falling-on-Newton’s head moment: what if all of this were online and accessible to everyone, not just people I know?

This Week/Cette Semaine à Paris

I’ve been celebrating my birthday since last week. Family and friends have made May more of a birthMONTH than a birthDAY by giving me beautiful flowers, sending me presents, and singing to me on the telephone. It’s always nice to feel loved and appreciated, but especially on the day that marks your entry into the world.

The best gift, though, is a letter my mother sent to me. It is not a letter she wrote, but a letter she has been saving, a letter written by a student of hers on the occasion of my birth. This letter was written to me -- not yet a month old -- by a young man of 14. It reads:

C’est Une Maison Bleue

As a child, I listened to Maxime Le Forestier’s song “San Francisco” over and over again, searching for clues. Surely, he was singing about my family’s neighborhood! His descriptions of houses leaning up against hills, of a city cloaked and swimming in fog, the light, the crazies and long hairs playing guitar were exactly what I saw looking out my bedroom window. I knew exactly what he was talking about, but in my kid brain, I figured I must be wrong. How could someone know so intimately the landscape of my American home, yet praise it in our secret language, French? It confused me in the same way that “Rendezvous,” the name of a local bar on Divisadero Street, confused me. Was the bar French? How do you pronounce “Rendezvous” in English?
