Summer Solstice is a celebration of the earth’s incredible bounty! Summer Solstice is a festival of this inner fire/power, the power that creates abundance.
The power that brings things to fulfillment, and expands and brightens our lives, that makes good things come from seed ideas and plans. And the warmth of the sun with the long, hot days continually remind us of how good it is to find a balance between intense activity and idle stillness.
108 is a sacred number in many cultures and religions and has great significance in the ancient yogic texts.
- The diameter of the sun is 108 times that of the earth.
- There are 108 sounds in the Sanskrit language (the oldest language recorded), 54 representing feminine energy and 54 representing masculine energy.
- There are said to be 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra - 108 is a Harshad (meaning “great joy” in Sanskrit) number - it’s divisible by the sum of its digits.
- There are said to be 108 earthly desires, lies and delusions.
By practicing 108 sun salutations we bow down to and honour the sun, that which gives us our life energy.
We can use this practice to “get in the zone” because repetitive activity is favourable for meditation. Discover your own discipline and challenge yourself. Release the old and welcome in the new!
We will practice the Sun Salutations in sets, with small breaks between to talk about the meaning of the Summer Solstice and the number 108.
The workshop will end with a long relaxation, meditation, and pranayama practice to complete the ritual.
Please bring a mat, a towel, and a bottle of water. I will bring snacks, but if you would like to stay and picnic after, please bring your lunch!
